A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is restricted or completely blocked. The blockage is usually due to the accumulation of fat, cholesterol, or any other harmful substances in the heart arteries. In simple terms, a heart attack occurs when arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart are completely or severely blocked. It is important to note that blockage can’t be built up in a day, but rather it is deposits built up over time containing fats and cholesterol.

Common Symptoms of Heart Attack
- Chest Pain: One of the most commonly seen symptoms among different age groups of people is chest pain or discomfort. The pain can be described as pressure, tightness, or sudden discomfort in the chest. In a few words, it may feel like something heavy or massive sitting on your chest and making it difficult to breathe. Discomfort usually occurs on the left side of the body in the chest, arms, shoulders, neck, back, or stomach.
- Shortness of Breath: Many people experience shortness of breath during or before a heart attack. It is directly linked to the reduction of oxygen in the blood and the heart struggles to pump the blood smoothly.
- Fatigue: Tiredness and weakness are other symptoms of a heart attack. This can be seen even without doing any physical activity.
- Nausea or Vomiting: An individual may feel dizzy or faint before or during a heart attack. This can be due to a lack of blood supply in the heart or a reduction of oxygen in the blood.
- Indigestion: Some individuals, particularly women, face this common symptom of heart attack. It feels like burning in the heart or stomach upset.
